Abstract


THE METAPHORIC PERCEPTIONS OF TURKISH TEACHING STUDENTS ON FOREIGN STUDENTS SPEAKING TURKISH
The purpose of this study is to determine the metaphoric perceptions of Turkish Teaching Department students on the foreigners speaking Turkish. For this purpose, 80 students from 3rd and 4th Grades at Turkish Teaching Department were asked to fill in the gaps in the statement “The speaking of Turkish by foreigners is like …, because …”. The answers given by the 3rd and 4th Grade Turkish Teaching department students were reviewed one by one, and the invalid metaphors were sifted, and the data were prepared for Content Analysis. Then, the metaphors developed for the concept “speaking Turkish by foreigners” and the explanations that were given as the justification of these metaphors were transferred into computer medium, and the raw text data were obtained. These texts were then read a few times and were evaluated. The metaphors that had similar properties were collected together to form common themes, and the Content Analysis Technique was used in the analysis of the data. At the end of the study, it was determined that 74.1% of the 3rd and 4th Grade Turkish Teaching Department students had developed positive metaphors about the speaking Turkish by foreigners. It was also determined that 25,9% developed negative metaphors. The metaphors with the highest frequency among the ones developed by students was as follows; the learning of the speaking process of children, singing in a different language, establishing a new state, and culture transfer. The positive metaphors may be collected under the following categories; the environment, geography, sports, political items, music, food, development, identification, culture and creativity. The students who developed negative metaphors developed the understandability, food and creativity metaphors. These metaphors were evaluated under the negative attitude category. In addition, the metaphoric perception statements were visualized with the Cloud Software in the Results section.
