Abstract

EUROPEAN UNION’S APPROACH AND POLICIES ABOUT SYRIAN REFUGEES
In Syria, the developments that started in March 2011 and continued afterwards dragged the country into a civil war. The conflicts among the Syrian government, opposing groups and The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant intensified the problem and carried the issue to a global scale. The Syrian refugees, who worried about their lives and wanted to migrate to neighboring countries in the first place and then to European countries where they believed their lives would be more meaningful and valued, constituted another dimension of the problem. These refugees who especially wanted to move to EU member states from Turkey became the actors of a modern humanitarian plight most of the time due to the harsh and indifferent attitude of European countries. This is because the Union that had been established upon humanitarian values such as “human rights” and “democracy” resorted to “marginalizing” and “exclusivist” discourses when refugees and especially Syrian refugees were at stake.
