Abstract

THE PERCEPTION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN BY THE PROPHET UMAR AND HIS HADITHS ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Being the second caliph of Islam, the Prophet Umar is a well-known companion with his hard-temper. The administrative duty and the family bond to the Prophet and his views of the public life (fiqh) brings him to the fore among companions. Moreover, when the Prophet was alive Umar’s practice of judicial affairs in Medina and the practices of his caliphate was the most important influence in recognition of "Fair Umar". The tasks and responsibilities that Umar has undertaken combined with his hard-temper, especially his words and practices related to women has gained even more importance nowadays and has increased the need of research. With more active participation of women in their working life, it is seen that religious discourses in the media directed towards women are increasing today. Social media comments on "Women and Islam", internet and television news about violence against women highlights the attention in this context. In addition, in recent years, anti-Islamists have also produced some discourses on violence against women. For example, Umar beating women (concubine), causing the Prophet's (a.s) daughter Fatima a miscarriage, having special permission to beat women, walked in the market with a whip in his hand and that it was not possible to put an end to this hard property. In addition, Islam is claimed to have violent references (verses and hadiths) against women related to Umar is given in social media. It is said that a negative "Islamic religion and prophetic perception" is being conducted, which is triggered by Islamophobic discourses in the West. In this study, it will be argued how the claims of Islamic propaganda have had hadiths involving the perception of "violence against women", and that the allegedly mentioned expressions on social media users, which are considered to be critical according to the hadith narration that these narrations are transmitted through Umar.
